Research Interests:
Does the communication between neurons occur solely via synapses? The neuronal activity changes the potential of the extracellular space and results in current sources and sinks. A very important question is how the endogenous electric fields have an influence on the neuronal activity via a feedback mechanism. We are interested to understand this so-called ephapic coupling by analyzing extracellular recordings in freely behaving animals.
We are also studying neuronal oscillations especially during sleep by developing mathematical models. In fact neurons are not silent during sleep and show different oscillations with various spatiotemporal characteristics at different stages of sleep such as up and down state, sleep spindles and sharp wave ripples. Another question we want to address is how sleep can affect memory consolidation and forgetting by recording and analyzing human EEG.
